Strain state control by tool design

In this project, the Research Center for Industrial Metal Processing composed of the Institute for Forming Technology and Lightweight Components and Forvia-Faurecia investigate the influence of tool geometry on strain development in drawn cups. The origin of this research question is the occurrence of edge cracks in deep-drawn components in the automotive sector. These make trimming of the affected areas necessary, which reduces material utilization. This motivates the basic investigations on square cups. By adapting the process sequence through drawing with a round punch, the strain development is influenced in such a way that wrinkling no longer occurs in the components and consequently crack initiation is prevented. Future investigations will focus on the experimental and numerical evaluation of the performance of the cups produced with the new and innovative process sequence.
